びょうじょう【病状】

the condition of a patient; how sb is doing; the state [progress] of a disease.

●一進一退の病状 progress and relapse; fluctuation; getting a little better and then getting worse again; being up and down

・一進一退の病状だ. She goes up and down. | Her condition fluctuates. | 《文》 Improvement (in her condition) is followed by (a) relapse.

●病状が好転する 〔病人が〕 take a turn for the better; one's condition improves [starts to improve]

・病状が悪化する 〔病人が〕 take a turn for the worse; one's condition deteriorates; there is a deterioration (in one's condition)

・病状が芳しくない the prognosis is poor; one's condition is not good.

●奥さんのご病状はいかがですか. How is your wife (doing)? | Is your wife doing any better [wife's condition improving]?

・病状ははかばかしくない. The patient's progress is not satisfactory. | The case is not going well.
